PRs celebrate Lee Elia’s tirade

For the uninformed, today is the 25th anniversary of one of the most infamous meltdowns in sports… Cubs manager Lee Elia gives it to the media and Cubs fans. Especially Cubs fans. Warning: contains adult language.

Wedding night brawl lands couple in jail

This isn’t official PR news, but it’s definitely a must read. The short of it… a Pittsburgh couple has a wedding reception, gets drunk, causes a scene at their hotel afterward… groom kicks bride, bride screams, members from another wedding party intervene to restrain drunken groom, drunken groom wails on his attackers, bride joins in, potted plants get tossed, couple spends night in jail. Here’s the best part… great reporting:

Neither Mrs. Wielechowski nor her husband would comment following their separate preliminary arraignments yesterday. Mrs. Wielechowski, still dressed in her wedding gown, was picked up by her father and taken home. No one was awaiting Dr. Wielechowski, whose left eye was blackened and swollen shut. He was arraigned wearing tuxedo pants, a bloodied T-shirt and one shoe.

Pocket Rockets stage late comeback

Trailing by 9 points with 10 minutes to go, the Pocket Rockets (1-1) rallied for two late touchdowns while holding Clients #1-8… (0-2) scoreless to hang on to a 36-29 win. Game ball goes to me (I don’t like to award myself game balls, but since there seemed to be a consensus at the postgame so who am I to argue?), for scoring two second-half touchdowns, including the game-winner, and intercepting a pass as Clients #1-8 threatened to make it interesting on the last drive of the game. Yay me!

It was, of course, an outstanding team effort. With only 6 players (3 guys and 3 gals) we had to be efficient offensively. The ladies got us moving early… Jackie had a couple quick catches and Mere spun herself halfway down the field on a big gainer. Uncle Ron took a short pass from there for our first score. Steady Freddie, playing on a per diem contract, took a slant route the distance for our second score… Stepha made a pretty catch on the fade for the conversion.

In the second half, I ran it in from about 8 yards for our first score. Later, Mere made a great grab on the wheel route for a long score… pleasing some fans in the parking lot. I believe Freddie caught the conversion. After a fourth-down stop with just under 3 minutes to go, Steph worked the sideline for a nice gain and milked some precious time off the clock. I took it from there, scoring on an improvised run. Steph beat her defender for the two-point conversion to put us up 7, the margin of victory.

After that it was a quick jaunt over to Donohue’s for me… just in time to catch the Pens dispatch the Rangers in Game 2, 2-0. I was joined later by Freddie, Stepha, Uncle Ron and Jackie. Sunday’s items included: a turkey club, veggie burger, southwest chicken panini, a taco salad encore and a buffalo chicken wrap… and of course, many pitchers of bud light and a few games of Keno.

I think Stepha, Ron and Jackie went to Chelsea for some more postgame shenanigans… any update on that?

This week’s opponent: Clients #1-8 and a couple 7 Diamonds

OK, at first I thought it was a douchebaggy name… but apparently it refers to the Eliot Spitzer prostitution scandal… so a tip-o-the-cap to our foes this week. Let’s hope they are as good as their name so we’ll have a good game. And, with any luck, the women on the team will dress like $5,000-a-night hookers.

Tim is out this week on his belated honeymoon. Danny says he is likely out. I expect that everyone else is in? Let me know.

I forgot the foodie roundup last week… We (Tim, Stepha, Jackie, Mere and me) went to Donohue’s in Watertown after the game… this could become our regular hangout after Arsenal games. It’s close, relatively cheap, has very heavy chairs and tasty food. Mere and Jackie had taco salads, I had a steak enchilada, Stepha had a grilled cheese and fries and Tim had an order of fries. We may do the same this week. The Pens are playing the Rangers on NBC in the second round of the playoffs on Sunday afternoon. We might just catch the end of the game. Go Pens!

Speaking of hockey… Round 2 starts tonight. Montreal hosts Philadelphia. Here’s my favorite Philadelphia playoff moment… it features R.J. Umberger. He’s from Pittsburgh. I covered him when I was a cub sports reporter and he played at Plum High School. Anyway, this is why the Stanley Cup playoffs are the best! Seriously, I could watch this in a continuous loop 24/7. Best line, by Eddie Olczyk, “That is not the gaze of someone who is with us.”

And if that doesn’t put you in a hockey mood, how about this oldie: the late, great Phil Hartman’s ad for Activision’s Ice Hockey for the Atari 2600.

FOUND: the Rock!!!!

Dan Hannon, BSSC Football Commish, tells me that The Rock is being stored safely in the BSSC equipment bag. Kevin must have picked her up after the games last week. She will be waiting for me at the game Sunday. Phew! This has really been bothering me… in fact, I had a dream last night that I found her in my condo, tucked behind a door. Imagine my disappointment when I woke… then my joy when I read Dan’s e-mail. Woo-hoo! No more sleepless nights for me, and more bruised fingertips for you guys.

MISSING: The Rock!!!

Yo, I can’t find The Rock. I know that news is welcome by most of you… but not by me! I love that ball. I’ve asked the BSSC if Kevin picked it up but I haven’t heard back. Did anyone see it lying around after the game? I thought I had it with me, but I can’t find it in my car or my condo. I am offering a reward for its safe return!

Elbow Skin dominates; PRs drop opener

Not much to say about the game Sunday other than to praise Elbow Skin for a near flawless game. They exposed us on defense and put us in some tough situations offensively. There is good news… I didn’t think we played all that bad. I think once the newbies get a better feel for what we do, we’re gonna be a tough team to beat.

Anyway, you’ll see that I’ve added a calendar to the blog and I’ve also registered a Flickr account so we’ll be able to run a photostream from the blog. Check back later for more photos and updates.
