Somethin’ better than nuttin’: PRs win Silver title

)

   The smiles say it all. :)

By staging a late rally and thwarting a last-second desperation pass, the Pocket Rockets beat The Beer Is Always Cold, 20-19, to claim the Silver chamionship of the D-I BSSC Flag Football league. Trailing 19-14 with 45 seconds remaining, the PRs marched down the field against an undermanned defense. TBIAC’s Nikko Mendoza went to the sideline with a knee injury, opening the door for the PRs. With 14 seconds left, on a third-down play from the 5-yard line, Jackie snagged a tight spiral to tie the score at 19-19. Another short pass to Stepha on the conversion put the PRs up 20-19, which proved to be the final margin. A desperation toss by TBIAC fell incomplete on the last play of the game. The result seemed to have healed the wounds suffered at the hands of our friendly foe in previous playoff matchups when we didn’t fare as well.

The game did not begin auspiciously for the PRs, who went four-and-out on the first series and opened the door for TBIAC to grab a quick 6-0 lead. The PRs countered to tie the game, then held on a fourth-down late in the half to keep the score knotted 6-6.

TBIAC went to work in the second half and took a 13-6 lead. The PRs countered with a long drive, culminating with Mere taking an outcut into the endzone. The conversion tied it and set up the last-minute heroics.

Game ball goes to Jackie for catching the winning score and recovering from an early drop that sent my blood pressure up about 20 points. She really deserves a pat on the back. When we tied TBIAC earlier in the year, she dropped the game-winning touchdown. Way to hang in there and cash in this time.

So we finished the season 4-3-1, including a 2-game winning streak as we head into the fall season (begins Sept. 7). That’s not too bad, but of course we want to do better in the fall and win the Gold championship.

After the game we went to the Sports Depot for various goodies… Chicken Parm sandwich, Pulled Pork, a mushroom burger, French Dip w/ mashed potatoes, and a taco salad (better than Donohue’s, so says Mere).

Stay tuned for more team announcements, including parties, a trip to Foxwoods and roster updates.
